We lead by example.

Our Vision:

We lead through strong collaboration with all stakeholders, we aim for academic achievement for all of our scholars, we strengthen relationships with students, families, community and staff, and we engage in meaningful learning for both students and staff.

"We Lead by Example"

Cavazos Elementary School is located in West Odessa, Texas; Odessa's population was 114,428 at the 2020 census, making it the 28th-most populous city in Texas; it is the principal city of the Odessa metropolitan statistical area, which includes all of Ector County. The metropolitan area is also a component of the larger Midland–Odessa combined statistical area, which had a 2010 census population of 278,801; a report from the United States Census Bureau estimated that the combined population as of July 2015 is 320,513.[5][6]  In 1948 Odessa was also the home of First Lady Barbara Bush, and the onetime home of former Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush. Former President George H.W. Bush has been quoted as saying "At Odessa we became Texans and proud of it."[7]

Our school has a principal, an assistant principal, one counselor, 33 classroom teachers, 2 physical education teachers, 1 music teacher, 2 special education teachers, 2 MCL II (master classroom teachers in 4th & 5th grade) , 2 part-time reading tutors, 1 behavior support teacher, 3 flex aides for enrichment support, 2 bilingual aides, an administrative secretary, 1 attendance building clerk, 1 records clerk, 1 library technitian, and 1 campus coordinator from Community in Schools.  The school has been a “unrated” status in the accountability report card and it is considered a priority campus for the 22/23 SY to ensure the school is exited from “unrated” status.

The school works closely to build on home-school-community partnerships. The Principal undertakes the development of community partnerships between all stakeholders with the support of Community in Schools. The Annual Title I Parent Needs Assessment & Feedback Survey for the 2023-2024 school year defined the school as responsive and proactive to bridging parent-school relationships.

Our school wishes to strengthen our community of learners to maximize the participation of all stakeholders – students, families and the wider community and promote our school as a school of excellence, opportunity and inclusion.

Cavazos Elementary is in its first year of implementation of Opportunity Culture.  Year one consists of supporting fourth and fifth grade students which have historically faced interruption of formal instruction due to teacher vacancies.  Cavazos Elementary believes that If we build strong, supportive, and adaptable teams through implementation of multi-classroom roles and structures school-wide, then it will empower students and teachers to create a more personalized support and define a shift in our overall school culture, leading to impactful rigorous, student-centered academic outcomes.

Cavazos Elementary School has shifted to focus on high standards of Literacy and Numeracy based as measured by district and campus formative and summative assessment data. At Cavazos Elementary School, the dedicated staff is committed to providing students with a broad and practical learning experience incorporating:

  1. A strong emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy

  2. Thinking & rigorous skills embedded in our district adopted curriculum.

  3. Specialist Music, Coding, STEM, and Library programs

  4. Physical education and participation in after school sports

  5. A range of small group extension and support programs

  6. Opportunities for student leadership such as Student Council, Newspaper/Yearbook Club, Chess Club & Service Learning.

  7. A range of primary interventions that ensure student wellbeing, health and safety.

Community engagement that builds on the strong foundations of Literacy and Numeracy are a priority for our school. Our wish is to broaden our partnerships with local organizations to support literacy and numeracy at home, as it has many positive outcomes for our students.

Modern technologies are embraced and staff take advantage of our wireless computer network, iPads and Notebook program. Every opportunity to access new learnings and opportunities for the implementation of learning technologies is taken.

We have been awarded the Kal Ripken STEM lab which provides our students with opportunities to expand their knowledge.

The school has adequate facilities and a range of spacious outdoor space with outdated playground equipment.  Our hopes and commitment is to bring a more modern Play Pod and shade structures. Through the Campus Improvement Team, we are keen to develop an outdoor learning space and consider how best we can build up sustainable environment options. Overall, the classrooms are well resourced and we have a modern library with an extensive collection of a variety of genres in English & Spanish.
